In Nepal, the official formula accepted by all major universities and boards is:

This formula is recognized by NEB (National Examinations Board), Tribhuvan University (TU), Kathmandu University (KU), Pokhara University (PU), Purbanchal University (PBU), and CTEVT. On a 4.0 scale this produces the same numbers, but your institution's official documentation uses × 25. In the United States, colleges and universities use the 4.0 GPA scale. To convert a percentage grade to GPA:
GPA = (Percentage ÷ 100) × 4
To go the other direction:
Percentage = (GPA ÷ 4) × 100
Example: 85% ÷ 100 × 4 = 3.4 GPA. A 3.4 GPA falls in the B+ range and is considered a strong academic record for most US university admissions.

Weighted GPA note: Some US high schools use a weighted scale (up to 5.0) for AP, IB, and Honors courses. If your school uses weighted GPA, a score above 4.0 is possible and normal — this does not convert to a percentage above 100%. Use your unweighted GPA for standard college applications unless specifically asked for weighted.
The official formula used in Nepal is GPA × 25 = Percentage. This formula is accepted by all major institutions including NEB, Tribhuvan University (TU), Kathmandu University (KU), Pokhara University (PU), Purbanchal University, and CTEVT. For example, a GPA of 3.6 equals 3.6 × 25 = 90%.
A 3.6 GPA converts to 90% (3.6 × 25 = 90), which falls in the Distinction category. In Nepal, Distinction is typically awarded for 80% and above (3.2+ GPA). First Division covers 60–79% (2.4–3.19 GPA).
On the US 4.0 scale: 3.5 ÷ 4 × 100 = 87.5%, which corresponds to a B+ letter grade. This is considered a strong GPA for most US university admissions and scholarship applications.
90% converts to a 3.6 GPA on the standard US 4.0 scale (90 ÷ 100 × 4 = 3.6). This maps to an A− letter grade at most US institutions.
WES (World Education Services) does not use a fixed formula to convert Nepal GPA. Instead, they re-evaluate your credentials based on your official transcripts, your institution's grading scale, and academic rigor. Use this calculator to get an estimate of your percentage equivalent, but for an official WES evaluation, submit sealed official transcripts directly from your institution along with your institution's grading scale document. Lok Sewa Aayog (Public Service Commission) application forms in Nepal typically ask for your percentage or division. Most posts require a minimum of Second Division (45%) at bachelor's level, though competitive positions often expect First Division (60%+). Convert your GPA to percentage using GPA × 25 and write both values on the form — for example: "3.2 GPA (80%) — First Division."
Both systems use a 4.0 scale, but they work differently. In the US, GPA is calculated from letter grades weighted by credit hours, and percentage is converted to GPA using GPA = (% ÷ 100) × 4. In Nepal, GPA is published directly on your marksheet by the institution, and percentage is derived using GPA × 25. The scales look the same but the underlying grading methodology differs — this is why WES re-evaluates rather than simply accepting a self-converted figure.
NEB and most Nepali universities officially publish results in GPA format only — percentage does not appear on marksheets. However, many job applications, scholarship forms, and international university applications ask for percentage. The GPA × 25 formula is the accepted conversion method. When submitting to foreign institutions, include your marksheet and a note stating: "Percentage equivalent calculated per institutional grading scale: GPA × 25."
